Rail transportation (also known as train transportation)<\/strong> is a means of transferring passengers and goods on wheeled vehicles on tracks. Unlike road transport, where vehicles run on a flat, prepared surface, rail vehicles (rolling stock) are guided in a directional manner by the routes on which they run. Tracks typically consist of steel lines, placed on ballast links (sleepers), on which the rolling stock, normally equipped with metal wheels, rolls. Other variants, including slab track, are also possible. Here the rails are fastened to a concrete base that lies on a prepared subsurface.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Madras in 1832, the first railway plans for India were made. The first train in the world, the Red Hill Railway (built by Arthur Cotton to transport granite for road construction), ran from Red Hills in 1837 to the Chintadripet Bridge in Madras.<\/span><\/p>\n
