The Delhi University rolled out the best four rules for percentage calculation to simplify the admission process. The DU considers the marks of four subjects as the key to the admission of the student. They use the percentage formula to determine the accumulated percentage of the marks in the four subjects. If you are going to take admission in DU, you should have to know about the percentage of the marks.   • Students from Commerce and Science stream may face a deduction of up to 5% marks due to change in the stream. The percentage deducted would vary from college to college, so it is advised to check the college you are applying to.
  • One of the non-listed subject (List A) can be included in the best of four calculation without any deduction. Beyond that, one would face a deduction of 2.5%.
  • Students opting for Modern Indian Language(MIL) as a subject can get the advantage of up to 10% in their score. This is only applicable to the colleges that offer MIL as a subject.
  • *Music and Physical Education will be treated as academic/elective only for honours in music and physical education respectively.
  • Biology, biotechnology and business studies will be treated as academic/elective subjects.

 Is Physical Education included in the best four?

Physical education is to be treated as an academic-only for honours. Also, Physical education cannot be included in the best four when you are calculating best four percentage if you are looking forward to taking admission in programming or honours subjects except physical education(Hons.). but for any other course, Physical Education won’t be counted among the best four                                                              List A

Concept of ‘Best of Four Marks’

The Delhi University Consider the four subjects with best marks of student qualifying exams (10+2 Board Marks). Candidates seeking admission need to keep the following points in mind while calculating the best of four marks.

The four subjects the university considers when calculating the best four marks are:

Academic Subjects And Procedure For Calculating Best Of Four Percentage

For courses wherein Admission is done on the basis of Best of Four:

Procedure for calculation of ‘Best of Four’ subjects percentage for Honours Courses (For admission to Arts/Humanities Courses):
    1. One Language (Core/Elective/Functional)
    1. The subject in which admission is sought (If a candidate does not include the concerned subject whether studied or not in Best of Four in which he/she is seeking admission in the honours course, then a disadvantage of 2.5% will be imposed on the calculated Best of Four percentage)
  1. Any two other academic/elective subjects as per List A. (If a candidate doesn’t include the subjects given in List A in Best of Four, then a disadvantage of 2.5% in Best of Four for each subject will be imposed).
Procedure for calculation of “Best of Four” subjects percentage for B.A. (Prog.)/ B.Com (Prog.)
  1. One Language (Core/Elective/Functional)
  2. Any three elective subjects can be chosen from List A. A disadvantage of up to 5% *on Best of Four percentage may be imposed if there is a change of stream.
  3. One non-listed (List A of Annexure-I) subject can be included in the calculation of “Best Four” without any deduction.
  4. For admission to B.A. (Vocational) only, related vocational subjects may be treated at par with academic/elective subjects and up to two vocational subjects which are in a relationship with the course of study may be included for the calculation of Best Four.
  5. If a candidate opts for MIL (Except Hindi) as a subject, an advantage of up to 10% may be given in Best of Four in those colleges where MIL is being offered as a subject.

Admission to Science Courses

“All the subjects to be included for Basis of Selection (PCM/PCB/PCMB) must have at least 70% theory component of the exam. In case, the subject to be considered does not have 70% theory component and 30% practical component, then the marks of theory and practical only must be converted to 70% and 30% , respectively on pro-rata basis. These new marks will then be considered for calculation of PCM/PCB etc.” As per Daulat Ram College.

  • Can we include physical education in BA programme course without any deduction of marks in best 4?

  • hey i want to apply in BA physical education and political science programme .the cut off for this programme is 94.5%. By adding physical education in best four i got 94.5% and by not adding physical education i got 94.25%.so please kindly inform me that i am eligible for this programme or not

    • First of all, which course are you applying for? BA in PE or Pol Sc. ? If you are applying for BA in PE then you are eligible for admission. But for Pol Sc., Physical Edu is not condsidered.

  • If i include Commerce (BST), english, Hindi, Economics in my best of four and manage to get 98% will i face deduction in selecting BA(H) Political Science?
