The Shreshta scheme provides scholarships for students pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the fields of science, humanities, and social sciences.
The exam is conducted in online mode and consists of objective-type questions in subjects such as English, general awareness, quantitative aptitude, and reasoning.
The eligibility criteria for appearing in NETS include completing the 10+2 education level or equivalent from a recognized board or university and securing a minimum of 60% marks.
The exam is usually conducted in the month of June every year, and candidates can apply for the exam online by visiting the official website of the exam conducting authority.
SHRESHTA stands for Scheme for Residential Education for Students in High Schools. This programme is an effort by the Indian government to promote residential education in targeted areas. Through this scheme, the government will promote school attendance and college enrolment through providing quality accommodation and appropriate academic support to students living in these targeted areas.
SHRESHTA promotes education in two main ways. Firstly, it provides quality residential accommodation to students in targeted areas, making sure they have access to a comfortable and secure environment. Secondly, the scheme also puts in place appropriate academic support for these students, such as tutoring and mentorship programmes. By providing both a supportive environment and appropriate academic support, SHRESHTA aims to improve school attendance and college enrolment in its target areas.
The scheme is open to all rural, semi-urban and urban students in the 9th and 10th standard, but only school attendees attending government or government-aided schools are eligible. SHRESHTA also gives priority to underprivileged students belonging to Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes or OBCs, disabled students, and those belonging to minorities. Participation in the scheme by students is entirely free of cost and they receive all food, lodging, pads and stationary supplies required for their study from their respective residential institutions.
SHRESHTA aims to provide multiple benefits to students who join the scheme. These include improved attendance to school, higher levels of academic progress and success, greater understanding of the importance of education, development of leadership skills and a sense of responsibility. The scheme also provides job and career placement services in addition to college guidance and competitive exam coaching materials.
SHRESHTA is committed to providing an affordable educational experience. Tuition for the residential boarding school is free for students from families with limited financial means. The programme also provides scholarship and other financial aid to students in need. Additionally, the scheme covers nutritious meals, books and uniforms for all students, making it accessible to everyone.
