TISS or  Tata Institute of Social Sciences is recognized as a deemed to be university under section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act (1956), which was established in the year 2011. NAAC reaccredited TISS in February with a score of 3.89 out of 4, which is the second-highest score of universities accredited so far. A full-fledged campus is being established on 24.5 acres of land located within the Assam Engineering College campus at Jalukbari. TISS's academic programs focus on the Social Sciences and offer doctoral degrees in Education, Gender Studies, Health Studies, Management, and Labour Studies, Disaster Studies, Development Studies, Law, Media, and Cultural Studies, Public Policy, Rural Development, and Social Work. The selection in the TISS Guwahati takes place through the TISS national exam.

Should have passed atleast with second class Masters or equivalent degree in the relevant subject with at least an average of 55% of aggregate marks, or a grade point average of 3.5 under the seven-point scale of the UGC. In the case of SC/ST/OBC(non-creamy layer)/differently-abled candidates, the minimum eligibility is an average of 45% of aggregate marks, or a grade point average of 2.50.
