JEE Main Counselling 2020 will be conducted by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA). The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) is an autonomous body under Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) to manage and regulate the joint seat allocation for admissions to 107 institutes (23 IITs, 31 NITs, 25 IIITs and 28 Other-Government Funded Technical Institutes).

JEE Main 2020 Counselling Schedule

The counselling dates for JoSAA 2020 will be out soon. To participate in JoSAA counselling, candidates must register on the official website of Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA). The tentative counselling dates are given below:

JEE Main 2020 Counselling – Procedure

JoSAA is responsible for allotting seats to 106 participating institutes which comprises IITs NITs, IIITs and other-GFTIs. JEE Main qualified candidates who did not participate in JEE Advanced are eligible for seats in the colleges like NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. JEE Main 2020 qualified candidates have to register online and select their preferred college and course. Allocation of seats will be done online and depends on the candidates rank, category, availability of seats and other factors. After the seat allocation, the applicants will have to report to their allotted institute for document verification and fee payment.

Given below are the steps involved in JEE Main Counselling 2020 and Seat Allotment Procedure:

Step 1: Online Registration

  • Click on the JoSAA link available on the Official Website.
  • Login using JEE Main 2020 Application Number, Password and Security Pin.
  • Read the instructions carefully and click on “I Agree” tab.
  • Fill the details asked in the JoSAA Counselling Form.
  • Select the Declaration and click on the Submit tab.
  • Verify all the entered details and click on “Confirm Registration” button.

Step 2: Online Choice Filling and Locking

  • Select choice of colleges and courses.
  • Candidates can choose for change/edit/delete their filled choices
  • After verification, lock the entered choices.
  • Candidates has right to lock their choices after each counselling round

Step 3: JoSAA Seat Allotment 2020

The counselling and seat allotment authority, JoSAA will consider the following factors before allocating the highest possible seat as per candidates’ choices:

  • Category of candidate(Gen., OBC-NCL, SC, etc.)
  • JEE Main 2020 All India Rank (AIR)
  • As per the candidate's order of choices for different programs and colleges
  • Seats availability under different seat categories/seat quotas for which the candidate can apply.

Step 4: Fee Payment and Document Verification

  • After the seat allotment, candidate has to pay the Seat Acceptance Fee for the allotted seats through Net Banking/e-Challan.
  • All the documents will be verified at the reporting centre.
  • After verification of the documents and fee payment, the candidate will be issued a provisional admission letter.

However, if the candidates are not satisfied with their allotted seat then they can use float, freeze, slide and withdraw.

  • Float: Candidates who want to keep the allotted seat or upgrade their seat, can opt for this option.
  • Freeze: If candidates are satisfied with their allocated seats and do not want to participate in further counselling rounds, then they can select 'Freeze' option.
  • Slide: Candidates who want to accept the allotted seat and upgrade the programme in the same college/institute, they can choose the 'Slide' option.
  • Withdraw: Candidates who have already accepted the seat, but want to withdraw the seat then they can choose this option by reporting at the allotted institute before the final round of JEE Main 2020 seat allotment.

Step 5: Reporting for Document Verification

In the last step, candidates have to carry their original documents and report to the JoSAA 2020 reporting centre allotted to them. If anyhow, candidates fail to report to the centre or can not produce all the necessary documents, their candidature might get cancelled by authority. Candidates are advised to keep multiple copies of all the documents at the time of verification and seat confirmation. 

Documents required for JEE Main Counselling 2020

JEE Main Document Verification will be conducted for all the shortlisted candidates at the respective allotted centres. Verification will be conducted after each round. Candidature can be disqualified if any violation is found by the authority. Candidates have to produce all the necessary documents at the verification time for JoSAA 2020. Candidate have to carry both original and multiple attested copies of all the following documents to the reporting center at the time of seat confirmation.

  • Provisional JEE Main seat allotment result
  • 3 passport size photographs (the same as uploaded during registration)
  • Photo identity card
  • Proof of fee payment (seat acceptance)
  • Proof of Date of birth
  • JEE Main Admit Card 2020
  • Marks sheet of Class XII examination
  • JEE Main 2020 scorecard
  • Category certificate (if applicable)


The CSAB NEUT and CSAB SFTI counselling is similar to that of JoSAA. A brief introduction about counselling for NEUT and SFTI is given below: 

CSAB NEUT Counselling

  • It is conducted for filling up vaccant seats in North East Region and Union Territories region. This counselling would be organized by the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) in June 2020. 
  • CSAB counselling process will be conducted for 12 North East and Union Territories which includes Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura, Dadar & Nagar Haveli, Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Manipur, Daman & Diu, Andaman & Nicobar and Lakshadweep.

CSAB SFTI Counselling

  • It is conducted for selection of candidates in Self Financing Technical Institutes. Seat allocation depends on the order of preference filled by the candidates in their JEE Main All India Rank (AIR) in Paper I and Paper II respectively.
  • There are 34 participating institutes which shortlist candidates from CSAB SFTI counselling.
