The first test consists of 400 type objective questionnaires divided into two papers, Paper I and II respectively. Paper I contains questions related to current national and international events, Indian politics, general science, etc. Paper-II contains questions about common mental ability, basic math, communication skills, logical thinking, etc. The nominee is awarded a negative 0.33 mark for each incorrect answer. The candidate must defend at least 33% to qualify for the IFS Mains test.

The 2023 Indian Forest Service Mains survey will be conducted over a ten-day period from December 2023. The candidate must appear in all six papers from Paper I to Paper VI. Papers I and II deal with General English and General Knowledge respectively and are awarded the top 300 marks. Papers III to VI are optional papers selected by the candidate in the detailed application form and are awarded a maximum of 200 marks.
