NIOS is a Recognised Board: National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) is “Open School” to cater to the needs of a heterogeneous group of learners up to pre-degree level. It was started as a project with in-built flexibilities by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in 1979. NIOS offers schooling education through ODL- Open and Distance Learning Mode. It is the largest opening school in the world with the largest number of courses available. NIOS Board offers a flexible and unique education system to students who want to complete their studies at different levels i.e. secondary, senior secondary or vocational courses. Moreover, students who want to appear in competitive exams can opt for NIOS boards after class 10th to prepare well to crack the competitive exams.

The NIOS is a national board that administers examinations for Secondary and Senior Secondary examinations similar to the CBSE and the CISCE. It also offers vocational courses after the high school.

NIOS Examination

NIOS Admission to the secondary and senior secondary levels are conducted twice a year. Students can take admission under various streams or through Study Centre, Facilitation Centre, Regional Centre for the Secondary and the Senior Secondary Education Courses. The first cycle (Block-I) usually happens around April/May while the second cycle (Block-II) of admission is during October/November.

Is NIOS a Recognised Board?

Yes, the NIOS board is recognized by all universities and education institution in India. It is the most authentic open school in the world.

  • National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) was formely known as National Open School(NOS) and was established in 1989 by the Govt. of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD).
  • Formally in 1990, the Government of India through a Gazette notification vested NOS with the authority to examine and certify learners registered with it up to Pre-Degree level Courses.

  • Re-christened as the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) in July 2002.

How does NIOS Function?

NIOS operates through a network of five Departments, 23 Regional Centres, two Sub Regional Centres, two NIOS Cells, and more than 7400 Study Centres (AIs/AVIs) spread all over the country and abroad.NIOS is the largest Open Schooling system in the world with cumulative enrolment of 4.13 million (during last 5 years).
